Dual Engines of Thoughts: A Depth-Breadth Integration Framework for Open-Ended Analysis

Yu, Fei-Hsuan, Chou, Yun-Cheng, Chen, Teng-Ruei

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

We propose the Dual Engines of Thoughts (DEoT), an analytical framework for comprehensive open-ended reasoning. While traditional reasoning frameworks primarily focus on finding "the best answer" or "the correct answer" for single-answer problems, DEoT is specifically designed for "open-ended questions," enabling both broader and deeper analytical exploration. The framework centers on three key components: a Base Prompter for refining user queries, a Solver Agent that orchestrates task decomposition, execution, and validation, and a Dual-Engine System consisting of a Breadth Engine (to explore diverse impact factors) and a Depth Engine (to perform deep investigations). This integrated design allows DEoT to balance wide-ranging coverage with in-depth analysis, and it is highly customizable, enabling users to adjust analytical parameters and tool configurations based on specific requirements. Experimental results show that DEoT excels in addressing complex, multi-faceted questions, achieving a total win rate of 77-86% compared to existing reasoning models, thus highlighting its effectiveness in real-world applications.

I Used AI to Do All of My Holiday Shopping

WIRED

One of the promises of the next era of generative AI is that the technology will be agentic, or have the ability to perform tasks autonomously on behalf of us chaotic humans. That means AI agents will theoretically be able to "reason" about the next steps they should take, allowing them to execute multiple actions from a single query. The possibilities are endless, if you believe the hype--think maximum efficiency and productivity, plus a host of other buzz word-latent phrases that one might hear during a tech giant's quarterly earnings call. All I want AI to do for me, however, is to shop. I understand that some people find shopping to be a pleasurable act, but the options overwhelm me, whether I'm in an actual store or stuck in an endless scroll.

AI search could break the web

MIT Technology Review

At its best, AI search can better infer a user's intent, amplify quality content, and synthesize information from diverse sources. But if AI search becomes our primary portal to the web, it threatens to disrupt an already precarious digital economy. Today, the production of content online depends on a fragile set of incentives tied to virtual foot traffic: ads, subscriptions, donations, sales, or brand exposure. By shielding the web behind an all-knowing chatbot, AI search could deprive creators of the visits and "eyeballs" they need to survive. If AI search breaks up this ecosystem, existing law is unlikely to help.

Engadget

The Wall Street Journal's parent company, Dow Jones, and the New York Post are suing AI-powered search startup Perplexity for using their content to train its large language models. In addition, the publications are accusing Perplexity of harming their brand by citing information that never appeared on their websites. The company's AI can hallucinate, they explained, and add incorrect details.

Amazon Web Services has started an investigation to determine whether Perplexity AI is breaking its rules, according to Wired. To, be precise, the company's cloud division is looking into allegations that the service is using a crawler, which is hosted on its servers, that ignores the Robots Exclusion Protocol. This protocol is a web standard, wherein developers put a robots.txt Complying with those instructions is voluntary, but crawlers from reputable companies have generally been respecting them since web developers started implementing the standard in the '90s. In an earlier piece, Wired reported that it discovered a virtual machine that was bypassing its website's robots.txt

ChatGPT maker is set to reveal a new search product to rival Google in the next few days, report says

Daily Mail - Science & tech

The creators of ChatGPT are poised to release a new search product to rival Google, according to reports. The new feature, expected to be confirmed by Microsoft-backed OpenAI on Monday, will allow users to search the web via the popular chatbot. The details of how this will function have not been revealed, but it is likely that the AI will search the web for users and generate results based on what it finds. For example, this could let users ask ChatGPT a question and receive much more detailed answers that cite web sources like Wikipedia or online blogs. If true, it could present the biggest challenge yet to Google's search engine supremacy.
